Is the Metaverse Likely to Succeed?

It looks like people will soon stop treating the metaverse as science fiction. By 2026, one in four people will spend at least one hour a day in the metaverse for work, shopping, education, communication, and entertainment. That’s why tech giants are serious about the metaverse.

Almost all major companies are investing in the metaverse in some way. Meta is going to invest $10B a year to make the metaverse work. Microsoft acquired Blizzard for almost $69B in the race to the metaverse. And non-tech brands like Coca-Cola, Gucci, and Dolce & Gabbana are creating digital products with the metaverse in mind. If the metaverse takes off, they’ll be among the first to capitalize on it. Did you know that several startups have already received funding for their metaverse business ideas?

Why Invest in the Metaverse for Business?

Let’s put ourselves in your customer’s shoes.

Meet Stephen. He’s one of the 30 million users who play Fortnite every day. For Stephen, Fortnite is more than just a game: it’s a space where he spends part of his life. Besides gaming, he and his friends often watch sports tournaments on this metaverse platform.

How does it work? Fortnite is just a popular video game. It doesn’t even have VR for total immersion. The metaverse is just wrapped around it as an additional space. Nevertheless, it draws people in. They manipulate their avatars using a keyboard or a gaming controller. This is an affordable way to experience the metaverse without special equipment. It’s also an entrance point for potential customers of many brands that conduct metaverse marketing.

Now let’s see what effects metaverse marketing has for brands.

When Stephen first started playing the game, his avatar had a default look. As he gained experience and wanted to demonstrate his status as a pro gamer, he started buying custom looks. He cares what his avatar wears because it’s part of himself. Stephen changes his avatar’s clothes every day to reflect his behavior in the real world.

For shopping, Stephen goes to Retail Row, Fortnite’s shopping area. Balenciaga has just released a collection specifically for Fortnite. In real life, Stephen loves luxury clothes, so the store catches his eye. He tries on the outfits and is amazed: the clothes look cool, stylish, and well-textured, just like in real life. Stephen is thrilled with his new digital outfits, and now he looks at the brand positively in real life.

Technically, Stephen simply upgrades his avatar using images created by Balenciaga designers. This is one of the brands that conduct marketing campaigns in the metaverse.

That’s how advertisements in the metaverse work to spread brand awareness.

Balenciaga realized that some of their customer’s attention was moving from the real world to the virtual world. And in this virtual world, the brand was able to capture Stephen’s attention through gamification. Stephen could try digital outfits and explore them from every angle. He decided he liked the brand’s clothes and integrated them into his avatar’s appearance. As a result, the brand established a connection with Stephen. And when he needs luxury clothes in real life, chances are he’ll consider buying from Balenciaga.

Technically, any brand can produce customizable 3D models of products in the metaverse for users to enjoy. By investing in the metaverse, brands become stronger in the battle for consumer attention. If it becomes mainstream, they’ll be able to enter new markets and gain new sources of revenue. This is why businesses want to establish their presence in the virtual space now.

Will There Also Be Metaverse Enterprise Solutions?

Actually, some metaverse enterprise solutions already exist. See how they make cross-border teamwork more effective and affordable

The metaverse can also change how Stephen conducts his professional life.  We’re talking about a full immersion experience. Businesses are more likely to be able to afford several sets of equipment needed to access the metaverse than individuals, and it drives their opportunities to a new level. In particular, the metaverse provides a space where people located around the world can literally join together in one virtual room. So, how does it work both in the metaverse and in the real world?

In the metaverse, avatars meet in an office-like space. Stephen’s avatar looks just like him in real life, but for work meetings, he opts for office wear instead of his favorite Balenciaga clothes. Stephen’s avatar walks into a virtual meeting room and shakes his teammates’ hands. They make some small talk and feel connected even if they are continents apart. And all that without huge travel costs or exhausting video meetings.

In reality, Stephen enters a special room for VR meetings in his office, where he can move freely. He puts on VR glasses, takes controllers (or puts on a special VR suit), chooses the look for his avatar, and connects to the virtual meeting. To exchange handshakes, he presses the button on the controller.

For businesses, this also means having advanced tools for presenting ideas. Now Stephen no longer needs to share his screen to present to his colleagues.

In a virtual meeting, Stephen’s team discusses the design of a future product—a smart construction robot—with their customers in Australia. Stephen brings several virtual robots along with him—potential designs for the final product he created with his team. Their customers observe these robots from different angles. They see what’s inside and manipulate all the parts in real time. During this presentation, they can choose the best design and approve the model they like best.

What’s really happening is that Stephen has accessed the file storage and chosen the prepared 3D models which appear in the virtual meeting room. Using controllers, colleagues can rotate the models and resize them. They can even change the position of their elements and components.

With the metaverse, businesses can also onboard new employees more efficiently.

After a successful meeting, Stephen starts to augment his team with new employees to bring the robot to market. For faster onboarding, he uses the metaverse space.

Using virtual models, Stephen presents the robot’s components and features to new team members. They can explore how everything works and understand which parts need improvements. This helps the newcomers dive into the work much faster.

In the physical office, newcomers walk into a special room for VR education. As with meetings, they put on their glasses, take controllers, and connect to a metaverse learning space. There, they open 3D models of the robot and usage scenarios. They can explore them from different angles and get more detailed information using gestures and controllers.

AR and VR for Metaverse Applications

A metaverse world consists of immersive elements like landscapes, construct experiences, objects, and unique characters (avatars). They are provided by AR and VR technologies.

To go even further and create a fully immersive experience, companies combine AR/VR with sensors. In addition to the visual elements, it provides physical sensations. For example, the technology is already capable of giving users the feeling of getting caught in the rain and even being shot.

Tech giants consider VR a strategic resource and want to be able to tap into this technology in-house. For example, half of the companies Meta has acquired since November 2019 are VR studios.

AI for Metaverse Applications

Artificial intelligence makes the user experience in the metaverse immersive and engaging. AI—specifically, computer vision—translates users’ faces and body movements into avatars. The AI gives the avatars different facial expressions to depict emotions. This makes them realistic.

Here are real-life examples of how businesses can benefit from using AI to simulate facial expressions and synthesize speech

In 2020, rapper Travis Scott performed virtually on Fortnite. People attended the concert as virtual avatars. As a result, Scott grossed $20 million, including merchandise sales. That’s much more than what his traditional concerts typically generate.

Blockchain for Metaverse Applications

Metaverses have their own intrinsic economies. Users can buy, sell, and trade characters, digital real estate, avatar accessories, and other items. This wouldn’t be possible without blockchain.

In metaverse worlds, blockchain replaces states and banks. The technology confirms and transfers ownership rights. When used in the form of smart contracts, it ensures they are executed reliably.

Non-tech companies have already created their first NFT objects and started profiting from their sales. For example, the NBA’s Top Shots, an NFT marketplace, generated more than $700 million in sales between 2019 and August 2021.
