Gantom, a manufacturer of special effects lighting equipment catering to the themed attraction industry.

The client required a service provider with a solid practical experience in multiplatform mobile application development, as well as thorough understanding of hardware design. Softeq possesses a proven track record of successful collaborations in the required fields, which is testified by the company's customers. Gantom hired Softeq to create a multiplatform app (iOS, Android) that would allow managing its proprietary DMX compatible lighting products via a smartphone.

The app was to enable the product users to configure DMX compatible lighting fixtures using their smartphones instead of the studio remote control unit.

DMX Programmer allows managing any Gantom DMX compatible product by configuring the following properties:

  • Color
  • Brightness
  • Lighting mode
  • Special effects
  • Device start address, etc.

The app performs data exchange between the smartphone and the lighting device, which are connected with a cable plugged into the phone’s audio port.

By manipulating the audio stream in real time, the app produces RS-485 serial interface signals to communicate with the lighting fixture.

The team employed a conventional Waterfall-based software development process due to well-defined requirements availability.

Softeq’s team delivered both Android and iOS app version on time and on budget. By providing extra convenience of operating Gantom’s award-winning DMX compatible lighting devices, DMX Programmer enables more rewarding user experience, while helping the company keep the leading edge in the professional lighting products segment.

“As we started to have more demands from the industry for additional products, services, and software it made really good sense for me to contract out some work to Softeq. They allowed me to do more of a top level work […] while Softeq actually worked on the implementation. Being able to develop a mobile app version of the hardware programmer we used before was a tremendous win for us.”
