BlizzCon organized by Blizzard Entertainment, the #1-selling computer games maker, for years has been a must-attend event attracting thousands of gamers from around the world to soak up the latest and most exciting news from the Warcraft®, StarCraft®, and Diablo® universes.

Held for the seventh time, BlizzCon featured a host of entertaining activities — from latest game versions hands-on play time to global finals for Blizzard eSports, discussion panels, competitive and casual tournaments, as well as community contests running across four stages.

Employing Best Technological Advancements

It has become common practice for Blizzard Entertainment to employ the best technological advancements to make its shows an exciting and rewarding experience for its guests. To facilitate navigation around the venue, while keeping track of the action-packed event schedule, the company has been offering the show attendees a special mobile app to address these needs.

Choosing a Vendor

This year Blizzard Entertainment wanted to take a step farther and introduce additional valuable features and capabilities in the app.

Boasting successful past application deliveries for Blizzard Entertainment, which proved Softeq’s strong subject-matter expertise, enlisting the company’s mobile development services again was a natural choice for Blizzard.

Softeq was to implement an Android application replicating the functionality of the app’s iOS beta version developed at that time by Blizzard’s in-house developers. Softeq’s team had to work against a tough deadline with only 1.5 months left before the event launch.

Solution

The developed application codenamed BlizzCon 2013 Guide builds on a client server connection, utilizing web services for fetching up-to-the-minute updates about the show activities. To make the app even more valuable and appealing to the users, it was integrated with a third-party video platform twitch.tv, to support live video streaming.

BlizzCon 2013 Guide is packed with the following features:

  • Activities planning — Possibility to review the details of the official events taking place at BlizzCon and add them to the calendar. The events can be sorted by day, time, game series, etc.
  • Alerts setting — Possibility to set an event reminder for any event on the user’s calendar
  • Venue map viewing — Allows to zoom in on the exhibit hall floor to quickly find a panel, meet up with friends, or just navigate around the venue
